The second Longshadow Music Festival will celebrate the voice! Featured artists will include Helen Pridmore, one of Canada’s top vocal adventurers, and the vocal/electronic duo of composer/performer Mike McCormick (originally from Yellowknife!) and singer Jessica Wagner in a brand new stage production. The Longshadow Music Festival celebrates the music of the 20th and 21st Centuries, in particular the music of Canadians - and happens in northern Canada. Carmen Braden’s music company Black Ice Sound organizes the festival, with Carmen leading as Artistic Director. Helen Pridmore

Helen Pridmore is a singer and sound artist, with a focus on contemporary scored music, experimental music and improvisation. She has performed across Canada and the US, including a solo appearance at Carnegie Hall; Helen has also performed in Europe, Mexico and Japan. She has three CDs to her name, including …between the shore and the ships…, which won the 2013 East Coast Music Award for Best Classical Recording.

Helen’s current focus is on the technology of the voice and the body, with explorations into the concepts of aural beauty, space and silence. She is writing and performing new works for voice that employ both structure and improvisation. With degrees from the Universities of Saskatchewan and Toronto, and the Eastman School of Music, Helen is currently a faculty member in Music and Creative Technologies at the University of Regina. www.helenpridmore.ca

Jessica Wagner & Mike McCormick

Mike McCormick is an Oslo-based guitarist, laptop performer and composer originally from Yellowknife, Canada. Though his primary expression is through music performance, Mike’s creative output draws from a variety of disciplines, including conceptual and performance art, electroacoustic music, twentieth-century literature, and various notated and improvised music traditions. Besides performing regularly in ad hoc improvising and chamber ensembles, his active projects include the EIDOLON, an improvising algorithmic computer program, the composers orchestra OJKOS, and his vivid depictions of human intimacy explored in the Proxemics project. mikemccormickmusic.com

Jessica Wagner is a soprano currently residing in Edmonton, Canada. She holds a Master’s degree in Voice Performance from the University of Victoria, having studied under Benjamin Butterfield. As a performer, Jessica has a diverse repertoire and performance interest, having pursued further studies at both baroque academies and contemporary music labs. She is an active performer, singing many Canadian and world premieres, as well as joining choirs, orchestras and ensembles as a guest soloist.

In the summer of 2016, McCormick decided to address his performative limitations by composing a set of personalized technical studies for the electric guitar. Exploring the physical and practical distance between him and his instrument encouraged him to examine other "distances" in various aspects of his life.
